Boosting Competitiveness in Machine Tool Manufacturing with TwinCAT and PC-Based Control
From September 15 to 19, 2026, Beckhoff will exhibit at AMB in Stuttgart, showcasing how PC-based control can optimize metalworking processes from end to end. Key highlights include TwinCAT 3 as an all-in-one CNC solution, new function libraries for HMIs, and modular technology packages for applications such as additive manufacturing and EDM.
The machine tool industry faces ongoing pressure to make machining processes more efficient, flexible, and cost-effective. Beckhoff meets these demands with its integrated PC-based control architecture, unifying PLC, CNC, motion control, and HMI within a single automation software platform. As part of this approach, TwinCAT 3 operates as an all-in-one CNC system with a built-in cycle library, giving machine builders the flexibility to tailor control functions to their specific applications.
Built on the proven TwinCAT 3 HMI Server, TwinCAT 3 CNC HMI Base (TF5310) delivers intuitive, CNC-specific user interfaces. It includes a wide range of technology-specific control elements, such as axis displays, feed and speed override, jog and inching functions, a contour editor, and tool data and zero offset tables. Users can customize the HMI to their needs or start from pre-designed templates. A dedicated extension provides the real-time connection by merging data from the TwinCAT PLC and CNC into a unified data model. As a result, machine builders gain a fully customizable interface while significantly accelerating the engineering process through ready-made templates.
The CNC HMI Simulation Server (TF5320) adds an extra layer of process reliability by integrating a 3D simulation element with real-time data from TwinCAT CNC. Using current tool data and the blank definition stored in the NC program, the simulation can run synchronously with actual machining or in fast-forward mode.
At AMB 2026, Beckhoff will also present modular technology packages for TwinCAT 3 CNC. Extended Interpolation (TF5263) enables programming and interpolation of two independent paths within a single CNC channel, including tool radius compensation. Online Adaptation (TF5262) allows real-time adjustment of the interpolation path, tool compensation, and feed rate through customer-specific TcCOM modules. For additive manufacturing, AM Plus (TF5291) offers interfaces for predictive analysis of upcoming contour elements and dynamic synchronization of external process variables such as laser power or powder supply. EDM Plus (TF5292) is purpose-built for electrical discharge machining applications.
Rounding out the showcase, Beckhoff will demonstrate the flexibility of modern machine concepts with the TwinCAT Runtime for Linux®, which enables the distribution of runtimes and functions across containers for scalable, hardware-independent virtual controls. Visitors can also explore the XPlanar planar motor system with its floating movers, as well as the MX-System — a modular solution for control cabinet-free automation.
