Advantech TPC-B620 GPU computing box for modular touch panel PCs and edge AI HMI

AMC – Analytik & Messtechnik GmbH Chemnitz now offers the TPC-B620, a new computing box for modular touch panel PCs from Advantech. The module adds optional GPU acceleration to the HMI. As a result, machine builders can run edge AI applications, such as vision-based inspection, directly at the machine.

Why move AI from the cloud to the machine

Smart manufacturing generates large volumes of image and sensor data. Sending all of it to a remote cloud costs bandwidth and adds latency. In contrast, the TPC-B620 processes data locally at the edge. Production know-how therefore stays on site, which improves data sovereignty. In addition, very low latency allows immediate decisions, and bandwidth costs drop because raw data no longer has to be transferred.

Scalable hardware with optional GPU

The box offers two PCIe expansion slots for dedicated graphics cards up to 70 W, including the NVIDIA RTX series. Users can therefore scale computing power to the AI workload. Networking is just as flexible. Three LAN ports are standard, and half-size expansion cards add up to eight more, for a total of eleven. This port density lets several industrial cameras connect at the same time, without bandwidth bottlenecks.

Thermal design and modular displays

The housing uses a special aluminium alloy with spot welding and heat-pipe cooling. Thanks to this design, the CPU can use its full 65 W without thermal throttling. The base system is fanless, so there are no fan failures. For high-power GPUs, however, an optional active cooling kit is available. Moreover, the box combines with 12 modular display types from 15 to 24 inches. The range includes standard, high-brightness and slim-bezel panels.

Typical application: error-proofing at the assembly line

A good example is a complex assembly line for servers, automotive parts or high-end electronics. Here, the TPC-B620 acts as a real-time assistant for less experienced operators. High-resolution cameras connect directly to its LAN ports and monitor each assembly step. If an operator forgets a screw or misaligns a part, the local AI model detects the anomaly at once. It then shows a clear red warning on the HMI screen. Consequently, scrap is avoided and overall productivity rises.

Why it matters for engineers

  • One device combines operator panel and AI inference, so no separate edge PC is needed.
  • GPU power is optional, therefore the same platform fits both simple HMIs and vision tasks.
  • Many LAN ports simplify multi-camera setups.
  • Modular displays let OEMs keep one computing box across different machine sizes.
