Siemens has expanded the reach of Software-Defined Automation among industrial users via crucial updates to Simatic AX Logic Control Engineering (LCE).
The engineering tool now incorporates XLad, introducing visual ladder programming to the ecosystem for the first time, alongside native compatibility with Simatic S7-1200 G2 controllers.
These advancements integrate conventional OT programming with modern IT workflows, allowing engineering departments to optimize productivity while expanding into cost-sensitive automation markets.
Empowering OT Users with IT-Style Engineering Tools
Historically, Simatic AX Logic Control Engineering served as an exclusive, ST-based environment for specialized automation developers. The inclusion of visual logic via ladder diagramming means service technicians can now handle control software with ease.
Consequently, companies can lower onboarding barriers, fast-track troubleshooting, and enhance ecosystem collaboration across both operational and information technologies.
Implementing DevOps Practices in Industrial Automation
As the premiere text-based ladder tool inside Simatic AX Logic Control Engineering, XLad introduces modern software methodologies like automated testing, version control, and continuous integration to traditional ladder logic. By incorporating native compatibility with Git and CI/CD pipelines, engineering teams can track logic modifications transparently, elevate software standards, and drive better cross-functional collaboration.

Furthermore, XLad interfaces smoothly with Structured Text (ST), allowing developers to deploy existing ST libraries directly inside their ladder applications. Combining object-oriented principles with the visual clarity of ladder diagrams ensures that intricate control schemes are executed with maximum efficiency.
“By introducing ladder programming to Simatic AX Logic Control Engineering, we’re making Software-Defined Automation more accessible to a broader user base from the world of operational technology – bringing the digital and the real worlds closer together,” said Rainer Brehm, COO for automation and CTO at Siemens Digital Industries. “This creates new opportunities for efficient engineering, maintenance and collaboration.”
New applications with expanded hardware support
At the same time, Siemens is extending the hardware scope of Simatic AX Logic Control Engineering by adding support for its Simatic S7-1200 G2 controller. This opens a new spectrum of projects to be solved with SIMATIC AX LCE. Previously, Simatic AX focused on supporting Simatic S7-1500 controllers. Now, users can also apply Simatic AX LCE to the engineering of basic automation controllers.
Siemens is presenting these innovations at Automate in Chicago from June 22 to 25, where the company is highlighting how software-defined automation can be made more practical, scalable, and accessible across a wide range of industrial applications
