SIMATIC WinCC V8.2: JavaScript, MQTT and AI-Ready SCADA

Siemens has released SIMATIC WinCC V8.2, the latest version of its classic SCADA system. The update adds JavaScript for global actions, new BACnet, LOGO! and MQTT channels, stronger certificate and user management, and an MCP server that opens WinCC data to AI applications. Plants still running WinCC V7.2 can upgrade directly to V8.2.

JavaScript joins C and VBS for global actions

Until now, global scripts in WinCC were written in ANSI-C or VBS. V8.2 adds JavaScript as a third language for global actions. Scripts can run in parallel and have full access to tags, alarms and tag logging objects. A Smart Assistance Editor supports the work with IntelliSense, syntax checking and auto-completion, which should shorten scripting time and make WinCC more approachable for engineers who come from web development rather than classic C.

Connectivity: BACnet, LOGO!, MQTT and redundant channels

The new communication channels extend WinCC beyond the production line:

  • BACnet for building automation, useful when HVAC and utilities share the SCADA with production.
  • LOGO! driver to integrate Siemens logic modules directly.
  • MQTT publish and subscribe, with support for Unified Namespace (UNS) architectures.
  • Redundancy for the OPC UA and Modbus TCP channels.

V8.2 also supports Module Type Package (MTP), the SIMATIC Control Function Library (CFL), object-oriented engineering with reusable libraries and dynamic SVG graphics. The HTML5 WebUX client gives browser access on desktop, tablet and smartphone, with adaptive screen scaling, load balancing and redundancy.

AI readiness through an MCP server

The most forward-looking addition is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. Through REST APIs it gives AI tools secure access to runtime data such as tags, archives and alarms, plus read-only access to engineering and configuration data. Siemens positions it as the basis for natural-language support for operators and analysts: an assistant can query live values or alarm history without custom interfaces being written for each project.

Cybersecurity

Certificate management, access control and user administration have been reworked. WinCC V8.2 supports the Certificate Management Protocol (CMP) and the User Management Component (UMC), and builds on an IEC 62443-certified foundation. For operators facing stricter security requirements, automated certificate handling reduces manual work in OPC UA and web-based SCADA setups.

Why it matters for engineers

For existing WinCC users, the direct upgrade path from V7.2 matters as much as the new features: systems on that version can move to V8.2 without intermediate steps. MQTT with UNS support and the MCP server move WinCC closer to IT systems and data platforms, while JavaScript and the smarter editor lower the effort for new projects.
