OMRON R1 3G3R1 high-performance variable speed drive for heavy-duty industrial applications

OMRON has launched the R1 (3G3R1), a variable speed drive that now sits at the top of its inverter line-up. Covering power ratings from 0.4 kW all the way up to 630 kW at 400V, and built for a design life of 10 years, the R1 takes OMRON’s drive offering into heavier and more demanding territory than ever before.

Designed for the toughest axes on the machine

Most machines combine easy and difficult motion tasks. Moving a load horizontally is relatively simple; keeping a heavy load stable on a vertical axis, or delivering precise torque from standstill at the exact moment a brake opens, is far more challenging. The R1 has been developed specifically for these critical tasks.

Typical applications include hoists, stacker cranes, presses, winding machines, rolling mills and machine tools. The drive is equally suited to fans, pumps and compressors, giving machine builders a single platform for both high-demand and general-purpose duties.

A seamless step up for M1 users

Engineers already familiar with the OMRON M1 inverter can move to the R1 without any additional training. Both drives use the same parameter structure, terminal designations, functions and communication addresses. They are also programmed in the same environment, Sysmac Studio with Drive Programming customisation, which means existing PLC code and function blocks can be reused without modification.

Less downtime, faster commissioning

The R1 targets two of the biggest productivity drains on the factory floor: unexpected stoppages and lengthy start-up times. Its predictive maintenance functions, such as IGBT lifetime warnings, cooling airflow monitoring and complete traceback data, alert maintenance teams to developing problems before they interrupt production.

Commissioning is simplified by a new multi-function keypad offering 10 languages plus Bluetooth and USB connectivity, so technicians anywhere in the world can set up and troubleshoot the drive in their own language.

Safety and robustness built in

Safe Torque Off (STO) to SIL3 / PLe comes as standard, eliminating the need for additional safety hardware. The R1 is designed for harsh industrial conditions in line with IEC 60721-3-3 Class 3C2, and an optional mounting adapter allows external cooling with IP55 protection. Modbus RTU communication is included as standard, and the drive carries CE, UL, cUL/CSA and RoHS2 certifications.
