One device for two worlds – what sounds like a compromise has been a reality at SIEB & MEYER AG for over two decades. The Lüneburg-based company’s drive controllers combine the functions of frequency converters and servo amplifiers in a single device solution. With the SD4x generation, SIEB & MEYER is consistently continuing this path and demonstrating that specialized drive control does not necessarily require two separate components.
“A servo amplifier could almost always be used as a frequency converter, but that would be expensive and inefficient,” explains Torsten Blankenburg, CTO at SIEB & MEYER. “That’s why two separate product categories have established themselves on the market. Our approach, however, combines both – without any technical compromises.”
Why two devices when one is enough?
SIEB & MEYER specializes in high-speed applications and highly dynamic positioning drives. In these areas, conventional standard solutions are often inadequate. “We need precise control technology and sophisticated measuring electronics – for both servo drives and frequency converters,” explains Torsten Blankenburg. “Since we have the highest standards in both disciplines, separating them doesn’t make sense for us.”
A look at the market shows why most manufacturers stick to separate devices: Standard frequency converters are optimized for cost-effective, mass-produced applications such as conveyor belts. Servo drives, on the other hand, are more expensive because they require more complex control mechanisms. SIEB & MEYER is taking a different approach and combining both technologies in one drive controller, whose software is adapted to suit the specific application.
Drive controllers for high-performance applications
In typical SIEB & MEYER applications – such as machine tools or high-speed motors – the drive controllers fully demonstrate their strengths. In both application areas, the highly dynamic control technology and switching frequencies of up to 32 kHz provide the basis for achieving the required system performance.
Another advantage for users: The uniform SD4x platform reduces the need for different components and spare parts. In machines that require both frequency converters and servo drives, only one device can be used. “Especially in a machine tool, you always have both worlds,” explains Torsten Blankenburg. “With our drive controllers, they can be brought together efficiently.”
